Senior Advocate Tushar Mehta has been appointed as the new Solicitor General (the second highest rank of a Law Officer of the govt.) Of India. He is currently serving as the Additional Solicitor General of India.
Mehta's name was confirmed by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet. The post of Solicitor General had fallen vacant after senior advocate Ranjit Kumar's resignation in October last year, citing personal reasons.
Tushar Mehta will be Solicitor General of India with effect from the date of assumption of charge of the office for a period till June 30, 2020. He has been serving as the Additional Solicitor General since mid-2014, when the BJP came to power at the centre. He has appeared in many important cases including the challenge to Section 66A of the Information Technology Act.
