Religious Movements (600 BC – 400 BC)
Various religious movements like Buddhism, Jainism etc. were born and grew up in the Post-Vedic Period known as the Period of Second Urbanisation or the age of Buddha.
Causes of Religious Movements
  • The vedic philosophy had lost its original purity.
  • Causes were generated by the division of the society on the verna basis.
  • The vedic religions had become very complex and had degenerated into superstitions, dogmas and rituals.
  • Supremacy of the Brahmans created unrest in the society and Kshatriyas reacted against the Brahmanical domination.
  • Introduction of a new agricultural economy in the Eastern India.

I. Iranian/Persian Invasion – Darius’s Invasion
  • The Achaemenid rulers of Iran, who spreaded their kingdom at the same time as the Magadhan princes, tookadvantage of the political disunity on the north-west frontier.
  • The Iranian ruler, Darius penetrated into north-west India in 516 B.C. and annexed Punjab, west of the Indus, and Sindh. It gave a momentum to Indo-Iraninan trade and commerce. This province was the most fertile area of the Iranian empire. From this province the empire received 360 talent gold as revenue.
  • The Indo-Iranian contact lasted for about 200 years.

​The Mahajanapada Period (600 BC – 325 BC)
From the sixth century BC, iron tools and implements began to be widely used. This helped in the production of surplus foodgrains. The surplus could be collected by princes to meet their military and administrative needs. It could also be given to the new towns coming up. All this enabled the people to lead a settled life, to stick to their land, and also to expand at the cost of the neighbouring virgin areas. The rise of large states with towns as their capitals strengthened the territorial idea.

  • Rani Rudramma Devi belonged to the Kakatiya dynasty on the Deccan Plateau. 
  • She was the daughter of king Gangapathideva who normally designated her as a son throught the ancient Putrika ceremony and named her Rudradeva. 
  • She succeeded her father when she was only fourteen years old.
  • She was married to Veerabhadra Eastern Chalukyan prince of Nidadavolu.
  • She completed the Warangal Fort begun by her father
  • Marcopolo the Venetian traveller who paid a visit during her rule writes that she was a lover of justice of equality and peace.
